Biniam Girmay: “Mathieu was vandaag gewoon sterker”

Voorlopig geen nieuwe stunt voor Biniam Girmay. Mathieu van der Poel was in Visegrád net iets te sterk voor de jonge Eritreeër. Die mag morgen wel van start in de witte jongerentrui. “Dat is ook mooi”.

Biniam Girmay ging even samen met Mathieu van der Poel op de foto in de mixed zone. Gevolgd door een gemeende en Vlaamse ‘proficiat’ aan het adres van de winnaar. “Natuurlijk had ik liever gewonnen”, vertelt de jonge Afrikaan voor de microfoon van WielerFlits. “Maar ik ben ook blij met deze tweede plaats.”

“We kwamen voor een goed resultaat. En dat is het ook geworden. Over de strijd met Mathieu van der Poel in de laatste kilometer? Ik ben tot het uiterste gegaan, maar Mathieu was sterker. Dan moet ik daar vrede mee nemen. We zien wel of er de komende dagen nog iets mogelijk is.” Girmay gaat morgen van start in de witte jongerentrui. “Ook belangrijk”, zegt hij. “Toch niet vergeten dat dit mijn eerste grote ronde is. En de eerste etappe. Ik ben hier bijzonder blij mee.”

En ook al bedankte hij zijn ploegmaats uitgebreid, toch had hij een puntje van kritiek. “Ik heb een zware wedstrijd nodig. Vooral de laatste drie, vier kilometer hadden ze nog de wedstrijd nog wat harder mogen maken”, vertelde hij tot slot. “Daardoor heb ik de sprint iets vroeger moeten inzetten.”
