Because of their expertise, they are often asked for tips on how to deal with children during the divorce process.
In this video, Attorney Traci Vella shares her tips on how to make the divorce process easier for all family members involved, especially the children. It is very important to approach it in a way that is non-threatening to everyone involved. The divorce transition can be made smoother and trauma to the children be kept at a minimum when keeping these things in mind.
First come up with a plan ahead of time without your children present to decide what you will discuss when the family is together. Make sure both parents are involved and present during the meeting with the children. Never say negative or derogatory things about your spouse to your child or in front of them. It can hurt the child, make them angry and feel like they have to take sides in the divorce.
Don’t use your child as a messenger or go between to the other parent. You will indeed need to communicate with each other during and after the divorce, but leave your child out of it. If you can’t stand to talk to each other in person or on the phone, try another form of communication like text messaging.
Finally, please don’t ever make your children feel guilty for giving the other parent, or especially stepparent attention, it will only make them resent you in the end. Having a caring relationship with your ex spouse or step parent will only make your child feel more confident and secure. After all, children need all the love we can give them no matter what our title is in their lives.
Even though these are great tips on how to handle the effect of divorce on your children, they are also tips to be followed in court. The judge will look favorably if you act accordingly. We can’t change what has gone on in the past to get you to this place, but we can help you through this difficult time with some guidance, including helpful tips like these.
