Why I chose my LGBTQ daughter over the Evangelical Church | Susan Cottrell | TEDxMileHigh

What happens when the most important parts of your life come into conflict? When Evangelical Christian mom Susan Cottrell’s daughter came out, she faced an impossible choice: her LGBTQ child or her non-affirming church. In this heartwarming talk, Susan explains why she chose her LGBTQ child and how she fights for progress inside the Christian Church. Susan Cottrell is a prominent voice for faith parents of LGBTQI children. She is an international speaker, acclaimed author, and public theologian with a Masters in Theological Studies. After spending 25 years in the Evangelical church, she founded FreedHearts to champion the LGBTQI community and their families. She served as the Vice-President of PFLAG Austin (Texas) and was endorsed by The Human Rights Campaign and The Gay Christian Network. She has five children, two of whom are in the LGBTQI community, with her husband of 30 years, Rob. 1. You wouldn’t believe how many parents abandon they children once they learn they are different in a way or don’t meet their expectations. I am proud of this woman and wish I had a mother like her. Bless her and her family. ❤

  2. True love does not condone anything that will ultimately destroy a person.
God is quite clear in His Word that LGBT is forbidden and those who practice this lifestyle will not inherit the kingdom of God. But make no mistake, ALL SIN separates us humans from God. Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins that separate us from Him so why condone sin?

  3. Homosexuals tend not to gravitate toward Christianity because they find more love and acceptance in their own communities than in church. So maybe, Christians should start there, with love and acceptance. If they can’t do that, then they can’t be surprised.

  4. Narcissistic compassion on display. She may make her daughter’s situation worse but will be unwilling to reflect and consider that possibility because she only thinks that her intent matters and she feels good about herself.

  5. But its still an abomination… scripture: Romans 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a REPROBATE MIND, to those things which are not convenient….

  6. That is beautiful You make me proud to be who i am with the struggles i have. I have OCD Scrupulosity and I constantly believe that I am being watched that I Need to prove change and Go through suffering, really I put myself through it. God is love and He saves not Condemns. In all honesty I have only Condemned myself. God Allows us to Go through these Troubles so that we may accept ourselves live in Truth Love and Unity and Make better choices for ourselves. God is eternally Love as He IS Life and Light. Even when I see myself as an obstacle Searching for any answer or self believed lie. I can see that God will always Love and nurture us in his ways. We are a work of art. Every Canvas can do miracles, Put God first Trust in Lord Jesus Christ and you will see that there is acceptance. Mistakes are made for a reason are they intentional? not always not for me. Id rather be brutally honest than a Compulsive liar even though I Deny myself. I always find my way to God. Love isnt earned but it is Given. Lets share our love

  7. I am so glad I came across your talk. Thank you! I choose my child and will never abandon him. ❤

  8. God should always come first. You love the person and still disagree with their choices. The mother doesn’t see that. This is extremely foolish on her part.

  9. Would you stand beside your daughter rather than your brain if your daughter wanted to drug and multilate herself to be a different gender?

  10. "more at peace with God than I’ve ever bin" . . . . . . . DO NOT DECEIVE yourself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. This video is a very important part of what helped me to love and accept myself 💗 I had to be the one to do the work ofc but no human can do everything alone

  12. Adultery, murder, stealing are also sins, but do we hate our family when they sin? Sin is sin. Jesus told his disciples to “love one another as I have loved you.”There is too much hate in this world. Choosing between a child and a church should NOT be an option. The church chooses which sin they hate the most and forget that God is not a respecter of persons.
We can read the Bible and try to explain sin, but each person is ultimately accountable for his/her actions.
When pastors commit adultery and steal (SINS), the church embraces them. Go figure!

  13. These people sincerely believe they are in the right, but will find out in the end, they were so wrong 😢.

  14. Christianity teaches us to love everyone. As a matter of fact, God teaches us to love our neighbours as ourselves. So this entire theme that we hate anyone who does not follow our values is nonsense. I pray that her daughter is able to find God’s love and is set free from her homosexuality desire.

  15. How do I become involved with Frayed Hearts! I chose my son, left the Catholic Church and am closer to God than I ever have been! THANK YOU! Your words are exactly how I’ve felt for years!

  16. Daughter: Mom I want to jump off a cliff and die.
Mom: Ok daughter I will support you and jump off with you?
Sin is sin, love the person not the sin. Maybe pray that they can overcome the sinful desire instead agreeing with them.
If my kid said Dad I really love Cocain, I like the way it makes me feel, do you join him or help him get off of it?
Jesus loves you, repent and accept him as your Lord and Savior he can free you of this.

  17. as a christian that supports LGBTQ people, this is such an incredible video. true love is accepting others for who they are, no matter what. not by shunning, scorning, and belittling another person. that is not god’s love. the lord would never approve of such acts, as that is not the true love that god wanted us to spread in this world.

  18. I’m so grateful that I wasn’t raised religious. I’m super open-minded towards making friends with just anyone of any background. God isn’t real.

  19. "Depart! Depart! Go out from there, Touch no unclean thing; Go out from the midst of her, Be clean, You who bear the vessels of the Lord.
    "

  20. I Glorify God the Father Son Jesus who is Christ and The Holy Spirit. Amen. Heaven and God is above anyone and anything of this earth. I pray people wake up.   I feel sorry for anyone who thinks God is just an Idea. You perverse generation don’t you know you body is not your own it belongs to God. God is Holy so we need to stay Holy in our spirit. God bless your very misunderstood minds may Our Lord in Heaven have mercy on you all. She is religious but her God is Satan. Open your Bible. She is mocking the God of the Holy Scriptures, she is what’s called a "blasphemer" one of the worst sin against the Holy God (father who is in Heaven. I’m more than happy to help clarify any confusion let me know your questions I’ll send you a message with information where to find the answers using your Bible I’m happy to be a server of Christ.

  21. I was raised in the Evangelical free church of America and honey… it’s not a walk in the park. It’s basically Christian fundamentalism. Sweet to see this lady chose her daughter over her church.
